Aweber Vs. Convertkit

Heated post here from my own personal experiences with both companies.

So I’ve had Aweber for 15 years way back when I started my online marketing career in 2011 while in Rutgers Business School.

Due to the desire for novelty and wanting to “try” the coolest new email marketing service I went with Convertkit.

Convertkit was marketed as “the go-to” email marketing service for writers, bloggers, creators, newsletters and those wanting to build a strong online community. So I took the bait.

Things were great with Convertkit until…they weren’t.

For the first 20 subscribers things were smooth sailing.

Emails were being delivered straight to the inbox, subscribers were happy and I was happy. All is well.

But then, one day, oh say, December 11th 2024, things started to take a turn.

I woke up to new email subscribers and was grinning from ear to ear. One of them was a personal friend of my wife’s and so I was doubly excited.

I went into my Convertkit email automation sequence and it said “Email 1 Delivered”.

So I thought, “great, she got the first email.”

But I wanted to double check and so I sent a test email to my gmail email address and…

Nothing.

I refreshed the page, searched through “All”, checked the spam folders and still nothing.

And so I thought, “hm, that’s strange.”

So, I decided to try my business email address and waited 10 minutes, but still…

Nothing.

I contacted their customer service, which was terrible. I mean the “Virtual Assistants” were patient, kind, and did the best they could with their responses.

But, they mentioned someone would get back to me, but that someone did not get back to me until 24 hours later.

Look, I’m not one to bash or talk negatively about a company, but I’m going to tell the truth and save others from wasting time, money and life whenever I can.

And so, after not receiving simple test emails, receiving a response 24 hours later on a “possible” solution, and the fact I could not speak to a human on the phone to solve my problem, I decided it was time to move back to the old, trusty, “Aweber“.

Ahhh Aweber, oh how I’ve missed you.

Lo’ and behold, on the first try with my test emails, all 3 of my autoresponder emails in my email sequence landed in my both my gmail and my business email.

Huh, go figure.

Now, here are some Pros & Cons of both Email Service Providers:

Aweber

Pros:

  1. Near 100% guarantee to hit the inbox of your subscriber
  2. Robust features
  3. Been around for 30+ years
  4. 24/7 Live Responsive Customer Support: AWeber is known for providing reliable customer service, including phone support on most plans.
  5. Easy to use interface: AWeber’s drag-and-drop email builder is considered very beginner-friendly, making it simple to create visually appealing emails without coding knowledge.
  6. Large template selection: A wide variety of pre-designed email templates are available to get started quickly.
  7. Free plan option: AWeber offers a free plan for a limited number of subscribers, allowing users to try the platform before committing to a paid subscription.
  8. Solid autoresponder functionality: Basic automation features like autoresponders are readily available and easy to set up.

Cons:

  1. Limited customization: Compared to other email marketing tools, AWeber may offer less flexibility in terms of design customization and advanced features.
  2. Potential cost concerns: While there is a free option, depending on list size, AWeber’s pricing can be considered relatively high compared to competitors.
  3. Less advanced automation: For complex marketing workflows with multiple triggers and conditions, AWeber’s automation capabilities might not be sufficient.
  4. Landing page limitations: While AWeber offers a landing page builder, some users find the design options and functionality to be less robust than other platforms.

Who is AWeber best for:

Small businesses and individuals who prioritize ease of use and a simple email marketing interface, especially those looking for a platform with a good free plan to get started.

Cons:

  1. Email Designer: Email editor looks like a plain text editor.
  2. Personalization:
  3. Newsletter templates. Only around 15 templates at time of writing.
  4. Landing pages
  5. Analytics & reporting: no bounce rate, no heatmaps, or most engaging emails.
  6. Affordability. The tool has an expensive pricing model compared to other similar email marketing services. I was on the $15/ monther plan with a limit of 300 subscribers.
  7. Email deliverability: well, you know what happened, so yeah, no bueno.
